Sunk Ships

I wrote this the morning after it became clear we were headed for another Trump presidency.

That morning, people were celebrating, and I was told I was overreacting.

This morning, I’m thinking about it again.

Because things are worse.
So. Much. Worse.

Sunk Ships

Gutted.
Eviscerated.
Virulent vitriol
spewing from screens –
poisoning eyes, ears,
relationships.
Loose lips.

Friends,
neighbors admired,
trapped in the mire.
The voiceless drowned
by the inane babble.
The rabble roused,
dividing the house.

Excuses –
the lesser evil,
the devil you know.
Fanatics are fathomable,
but not the complacent,
laced with latent
bigotry.

Relent,
they tell us.
Don’t make waves.
Don’t rock the boat.
But we’ve capsized.
And the casualty?
Our decency.
